Pesquisa inédita: A percepção dos cidadãos sobre o papel dos defensores ambientais no Peru
O Núcleo Interdisciplinar em Políticas Públicas e Opinião Pública da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) apresenta a pesquisa “A percepção dos cidadãos sobre o papel dos defensores ambientais no Peru”. O estudo investiga como a população peruana compreende a atuação desses atores, com ênfase no conhecimento público sobre a crescente vitimização e criminalização que eles enfrentam no país.
A pesquisa foi conduzida entre 2024 e 2025 pela Dra. Yasmin Calmet, em parceria com a bacharel em Ciência Política Fátima Véliz, da Universidad Nacional Pedro Ruiz Gallo (Peru). A amostra reúne 427 pessoas com 18 anos ou mais, residentes nas regiões de serra, selva e litoral do Peru.
O instrumento foi um questionário com 34 perguntas, combinando escalas Likert, questões dicotômicas (sim/não) e questões abertas, aplicado por amostragem não probabilística por conveniência. Os resultados indicam que os cidadãos reconhecem a importância do papel dos defensores ambientais. Contudo, o estudo revela uma lacuna entre essa percepção de relevância e o conhecimento efetivo sobre a crescente vitimização e criminalização desses atores. Ao evidenciar essa defasagem, a pesquisa busca suprir a escassez de surveys sobre a temática no Peru e ampliar a produção de dados empíricos sobre o rol, a importância e a proteção dos defensores ambientais.

Versão em Inglês: The Interdisciplinary Center for Public Policy and Public Opinion at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) presents the study “Citizens’ Perceptions of the Role of Environmental Defenders in Peru”. The study investigates how the Peruvian population understands the work of these actors, with emphasis on public knowledge about the growing victimization and criminalization they face in the country.
The research was conducted between 2024 and 2025 by Dr. Yasmin Calmet, in partnership with Fátima Véliz, who holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the Universidad Nacional Pedro Ruiz Gallo (Peru).
The sample includes 427 people aged 18 and over, living in the highlands (sierra), rainforest (selva) and coastal regions of Peru.
The instrument was a 34-question questionnaire combining Likert scales, dichotomous (yes/no) questions and open-ended questions, applied through non-probabilistic convenience sampling.
The results indicate that citizens recognize the importance of the role of environmental defenders. However, the study reveals a gap between this perception of relevance and actual knowledge about the growing victimization and criminalization of these actors. By highlighting this gap, the research seeks to fill the scarcity of surveys on this topic in Peru and expand the production of empirical data on the functions, importance and protection of environmental defenders.
